Holiday concert travel: Boston ferries extended, Chicago rail changes continue, fares remain uncertain
Travelers planning late-2026 trips have one confirmed transit extension to use and two cost-and-service issues to check before leaving: the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has extended four ferry routes through Dec. 31, while the Chicago Transit Authority says Green and Pink Line changes tied to the Lake Street Bridge project are continuing.
The MBTA announced Oct. 28 that service on the East Boston, Lynn, Winthrop and Quincy ferry routes will continue through the end of the year. That gives visitors heading to Boston-area events another transit option beyond the previously stated service period. Check the MBTA’s current schedule before relying on a particular sailing; the announcement confirms the extension, not individual departure times or capacity.
Chicago travelers should not assume normal rail service. In an Oct. 27 update, the CTA said normal Green and Pink Line service was expected to resume later that week, but the supplied notice does not establish that service has fully returned as of today. Confirm the current status, any replacement arrangements and the time needed to reach the destination before heading to a show or connection.
The cost picture is less precise. NPR, WRGB, The New York Times and Yahoo have reported higher holiday airfares, while Yahoo has also reported on rising oil prices and their possible effect on travel affordability. Those reports establish audience-facing concern and reported market conditions, but they do not provide a universal fare increase for every route or traveler. Compare current fares for the exact dates and airports you need rather than budgeting from a headline.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that refinery utilization averaged above 95% of capacity from May through September 2026, the highest level for those months since 1998. That is a confirmed utilization finding, not proof of a specific change in gasoline, diesel or airfare prices. Travelers driving should verify current fuel prices and travelers flying should check live ticket totals, baggage charges and schedule changes before booking.
