About Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead are the founders of the modern jam-band movement. Formed in Palo Alto, California, in 1965, they brought together psychedelic rock, folk, blues, country, and jazz in a live sound built around extended, collective improvisation. Jerry Garcia’s exploratory lead guitar, Bob Weir’s distinctive rhythm playing, Phil Lesh’s melodic bass, and the band’s evolving keyboard and percussion lineups made familiar songs a starting point for discovery. Their changing setlists, seamless song transitions, and encouragement of audience taping helped create a devoted traveling community of Deadheads and established the concert-centered culture that defines the jam-band scene. Across three decades, they made each performance a unique musical experience, influencing generations of artists including Phish, Widespread Panic, and The String Cheese Incident. The original band’s performing career ended after Garcia’s death in 1995, but its songs, improvisational approach, and community continue through successor projects and countless other bands.
