About Bobby and the Midnites

Bobby and the Midnites was a rock band led by Grateful Dead guitarist and singer Bob Weir in the early 1980s. The project gave Weir a setting for more direct, song-centered rock outside the Dead, blending melodic guitar arrangements with rhythm and blues, reggae touches, and the technical versatility of jazz-fusion musicians. Its changing lineups included lead guitarist Bobby Cochran, keyboardist Brent Mydland, bassist Alphonso Johnson, and drummer Billy Cobham, alongside other accomplished players. Weir’s distinctive vocals and rhythm guitar anchored a sound that balanced accessible songwriting with adventurous instrumental interplay. The band toured and released a self-titled debut and Where the Beat Meets the Street. It is a historical Weir side project, separate from Kingfish, RatDog, and Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros.
